We all have our own tastes when it comes to our interior design styles. Understandably, we all want our homes to ‘look’ fantastic aesthetically, but how do we want them to make us ‘feel’?

To me, this is the most important aspect of interior design. There are countless ways to make a room look beautiful, but not all scenarios are for everyone, nor will they have the same effect on all. Emotional connection to a room is so important to make it work right for you.

What kind of home do you want to portray?

Before you decide on what look you want to give a room, you must first establish the exact function of the space. What will it be used for mostly and then consider any occasions it may fulfill too. Then decide on the requirements needed to utilise that use, and the room users.

With the function and users in mind, you can then decide on the type of emotions and feelings you want the decor to convey, whilst the room is being used.

Will your living room ooze warmth and comfort for family film nights?

Is your dining room planned to give and elegant aura for regular hosting?

Do you want your hallway to be welcoming and ambient for when you arrive home?

Do you like your home office space to feel organised and inspiring when you start work?

Once you have the feels pinned down, the look tends to unfold from there. You can pick your furniture styles, interior decoration, appropriate lighting types and details all in line with this.

My Home Decor Style

For me, I like my house to feel warm and homely for myself and for my family, but also welcoming for my guests.

Being a designer, I want my efforts to be visibly noticeable to whoever may visit. I like atmosphere, and ambience when the evenings draw in, so lighting is really important for me too.

I love using colour on my walls, plentiful textiles and any quirky extras that give interest and talking points, to convey these feelings.

We are currently in the middle of a home renovation, so pretty much every room is getting an overhaul, but here are some photos that show my interior design style (albeit some are a little dated now)…..
