Soft furnishings in the home really add to the overall aesthetic. The colours, textures and patterns from the fabrics, dress up our space, adding those special finishing touches.

As well as being functional, a lot of their purpose is meant to be decorative, so keep this in mind when maintaining them. If these smaller items are not well kept and are presented badly, it can really affect the look you wish to give, and therefore the job they are meant to do.

Take a glance at your home textiles next time you have a spare minute, and asses how they are looking. Consider if the below will improve their appearance in your decor scheme, and in turn, the way the whole room feels….

Iron Bedding

Heavily creased bedding can really ruin the look of a bed, and therefore the full bedroom vibe. The bed surface is such a large space, dominating the room, so any flaws to the way the bed is dressed, really stand out. If you have bedding that tends to crease a lot, iron it before using – it will look so much better.

Fluff Cushions

I really don’t like seeing squashed and out of shape cushions. Look to see if the cushion filler itself is the issue, and change it to something firmer and fuller if needed. To keep the filling plump and dispersed, give your cushions a good shake, all over, every day. This will make them look newer and more purposeful. Curtain Styling

If you have curtains up, don’t just pull them open and closed when required. Make sure this is done carefully to protect the curtain from ripping, and from breaking the pole/rail or any of the accessories. Space out pleats so the fabric looks even across the window. Also ensure any lining is hidden from view as much as possible, when they are open and closed (unless this also has a decorative purpose). Tie backs and hold backs make curtains look much nicer on many windows and don’t require much work or expense. You can then adjust the curtain once its back, to look well presented.

Rug Care

To keep rugs fluffy, full of their intended texture and fresh looking, hoover them often but also wash or dry clean them as much as you can. Rugs are often used on hard flooring and can cling to the dirt and dust from around the floor area, so keeping them clean is key for how they look. Use grippers to stop the edges curling up as these can be very difficult to correct once the damage has started, and doesn’t make an attractive feature for your floor.
