In reality, no rules really apply when it comes to using colour combinations in your home. What matters is that they visually work together for your project type, and for the look and feel you want to achieve. This could end up being be a soft pastel pink, mixed with a deep dramatic blue. Even all three primary colours can work together, used in the right way, complimenting each other in strategic proportions.

As an Interior Designer, I get very excited when customers express a desire to use interesting home decor colour schemes. As much as I also love neutral interior design, I adore using colour in unusual ways.

If your taste in interiors is using a good splash of colour, then don’t be afraid to try out different shades and experiment with a variety of combinations before deciding on your scheme. At this point, nothing can be ruined, so researching, sampling and testing is a must for creating something beautiful and unique.

Another point to remember, is that using more than one accent colour, or a group of colours together is fine to do. If a selection of shades look amazing together, don’t limit yourself. The best way to arrange this, in my opinion, is to use your favourite colour as the main feature, then work your way down, reducing the others in smaller quantities.

Colour should be used in home decor to create a space you love. Use what colours you sincerely like and what make you feel good, not what is on trend – unless you do genuinely love it. This way, you will achieve an interior that is truly you, evoking happiness and pride whenever you enter the room. That’s what interior design is all about.
