Is Your Room Serving it’s Best Purpose?

One thing we want our homes to be is functional, for us as individuals, and our families. Just because rooms have served one purpose in the past, it doesn’t mean that they have to remain as they were. If the intended use of the room no longer makes sense, is a hindrance or can be better utilised elsewhere in the home, then it may be time to change things up.

Below are some examples of how my customers have changed the functions of their spaces, which have better suited them, their lifestyle and their home.

Gym/storage garage room before, now a family cinema room…

Vicky was tired of her converted garage space being unloved. It housed some gym equipment and had become a dumping ground for other belongings. I helped her transform it into a stylish and frequently used cinema room for her family and their friends. I suggested an Art Deco inspired theme to go with her love of green and desire for a luxurious but fun look, all relevant to it’s new theme.

From a dining room to a parents retreat lounge…

Jane didn’t want a designated dining room in her new house, as per the last owners. She had plenty of dining space in the kitchen area that would suit her and her family just fine. Although she has a large lounge at the front of the house, her wish was to have another lounge, a parents retreat in this space, at the back of the house where it was quieter. I helped her with decorating ideas, sympathetic to the style of the Victorian period house interior. We made sure that we included her existing favourite art pieces and some antiques from her travels too, to really make it feel like her own space.

A bathroom that was too big, changed into a room perfect for kids….

Clare and Ben contacted me for advice on how to decorate their 8 year old girls brand new bedroom. They had swapped their large bathroom with her previously smaller bedroom, which worked out a lot better for the family and their way of living. This had created a lot more space and storage for their daughter to use, and they still had everything they needed in a new bathroom. The colourful and fun theme of their kids bedroom design has made their little one very happy.

A cluttered kids dining area transformed into a smart office space ..

Rebecca was struggling to work from home on this small dining table which she used for admin and shared with her children. By rearranging the room with a new layout idea, we were able to fit in a desk. Making this corner completely hers to work comfortably and effectively. The children still have their table, it has just been moved to a better location within the room, leaving Rebecca free to organise her work space with a lot less stress. We also gave it a bit of cute decor, so she can enjoy working in a more stylish environment.
