4 ways to transform your balcony into a relaxing retreat

Nick Acaster is Managing Director at Rugs Direct. Here, he shares 4 ways to transform your balcony.

Even the smallest of balconies can be transformed into relaxing havens — perfect spots for soaking up the sun, breathing in fresh air, and enjoying ice-cold drinks. These design tips will help you to create a practical and beautiful outdoor nook that you’ll love simply spending time in.

Choose practical furniture

If you have the space, a table and chair set is likely to be the focal point of your balcony, so it makes sense to start with one you love and then build your scheme around it.
While you want your balcony furniture to be stylish, the practicality should be your priority. If you have a comfortable and versatile table and chairs set, you’re much more likely to spend time out in the sun actually enjoying the space.
Bistro sets tend to be a great option because they’re compact but provide enough space for two to enjoy drinks or a bite to eat. They’re also available in a wide range of styles. Complete the look by adding a small potted plant and candle to the table and investing in some stylish outdoor dining accessories.

Get growing

Plants will help to give your space a colourful vibe and are sure to brighten your mood whatever the weather. Plus, with the likes of railing planters and trellises, you can incorporate them in clever ways that make the most of otherwise unused space.
Warm and sunny south-facing balconies are ideal for geraniums and petunias, but you could even try growing your own tomatoes and strawberries — they will look great spilling over the sides of hanging baskets, adding extra interest to vertical space.
There are also plenty of beautiful plants that are suitable for growing in the shade, such as begonias and busy lizzies. BBC Gardener’s World has a list of night-scented plants, such as jasmine, which make a warm summer’s evening on your balcony even more enjoyable.

Add soft furnishings

You might be wary of putting soft furnishings outside, but there are plenty of rugs and cushions that have been made especially for outdoor use. As balconies are usually dominated by hard textures like metal and brick, they will really help to add interest and make the space feel more welcoming — and comfortable!
Flat-weave rugs in black-and-white geometric designs are bang on trend and give a cool, laid-back vibe. They work particularly well when you’ve already introduced pops of colour through plants and accessories, ensuring your balcony design doesn’t overwhelm.
Don’t forget to invest in some cosy blankets for those cooler Autumn nights.

Create atmosphere with lighting

The right lighting can make your balcony a cosy and romantic place to spend time after dusk. Try wrapping delicate fairy lights around greenery or hanging festoon bulbs from your railings, always opting for a warm-white colour to ensure a delicate and welcoming glow.
Lanterns are great for dotting around — hanging on walls, popping on tables, or even tucking into corners alongside potted plants — and plenty of electric options are available if you’d rather avoid the risk of using candles.

We hope these tips help you to make the most of your balcony whatever kind of space you’re working with. For more home décor ideas, take a look at the rest of the blog and these inspiration boards.
