Most of us are currently spending a lot of time in our homes, thanks to the UK-wide lockdown. If you’re feeling productive, you might be thinking about completing all of those little DIY tasks you’ve been meaning to get around to. If so, have you thought about giving your home’s staircase a little update?
This is one of the features of your home that you’ll see and use on a daily basis, but many of us don’t give our staircases the TLC they need. I’ve put together this list of DIY tips that will help you to make the most of yours.
1. Consider adding a gallery wall

Hanging collections of prints and family photos around your home is one of the best ways you can personalise your space. Not only will this help your house to feel unique to you, but choosing prints that reflect your preferred aesthetic can also help to add the perfect dash of style to your décor.
You might have already started to hang art and photos in your bedroom or living room, but have you thought about using the space next to your staircase? Stairs are often seen as purely a functional feature, but there’s no reason why you can’t make sure yours also match the look of your home. So grab a hammer and start adding these details to your stairs!
2. Add a runner and stair rods for a dash of luxury

If your home’s décor is smart and sophisticated, with an element of luxury, consider adding a runner and stair rods to your stairs. This can be a great solution if you have wood flooring and stairs but are starting to find this quite cold, or your existing carpet is starting to look slightly tired and you would like to swap it for something that looks more polished.
Your runner will sit down the centre of your staircase, and you can then add stair rods for an extra stylish element. There are also lots of different designs of stair rod to choose from so, if an antique-inspired set is going to suit your décor best, or you would prefer something sleek and minimal, there will be stair rods to match your sense of style.
3. Give the bannister a lick of paint

Everyone in your home will touch your stair bannister multiple times a day, which means it can quickly start to look worn and in need of some freshening up. Of course, cleaning your bannister on a weekly basis can go a long way towards keeping it looking great but, after a while, the colour or finish is likely to look tired. Consider if you could give a new lease of life to your staircase by touching up the paintwork.
4. Assess whether your chosen paint colour suits the space

Choosing the perfect wall colour for your staircase isn’t always easy, because this space can often look a lot darker than the rest of your house. The same paint you’ve used elsewhere in your home might not always be suitable. It can be easy to just paint a wall and forget about it though. While you’re stuck at home, why not take the time to really assess whether your chosen colour works for the space? If you feel like this area of your home is looking a little dull, a lighter or brighter colour should do the trick.
If you’re considering doing a bit of DIY while the UK is under a stay home order, why not pay some special attention to your staircase? This area of people’s homes is often neglected, but giving it a refresh can make a huge difference.
